 Lateral Hazards are marked by red stakes or outlined with a red line on the ground. 

If the golf ball is accessible to the golfer and comes to rest within the hazard, they can opt to hit their next shot from within the hazard without penalty or take a penalty stroke with a drop. 

 Therefore, it's your choice to take the risk and play it where it lies within the penalty area, or be prudent and take a penalty stroke before putting your ball in play. (rule 26)
